Ten minutes of practice that fits a busy evening

A simple routine for short, regular practice: when to fit it in, how to start, and how to stop on a good note.

Short practice that happens often tends to be easier to keep going than a long session that happens rarely. Here is a routine you can try and adjust for your family.

Pick a regular moment

  • Attach practice to something that already happens, like after dinner or before screen time.
  • Keep it short enough that nobody dreads it. Five to ten minutes is plenty to start.
  • Pick one skill they are working on in class this week.

Start with something they can do

Begin with one question they are likely to get right. A good first minute makes the next ones easier.

Stop before it turns into a fight

End while it is still going fine, even if you planned for more. Say what went well and what you will try next time. Tomorrow is another short round.
