Talking about mistakes without the argument
Phrases that turn a wrong answer into a useful moment instead of a standoff.
A wrong answer is information. It shows exactly where to look next. The goal is to keep your child thinking rather than defending.
Try saying
- “Walk me through how you got that.”
- “Which part felt tricky?”
- “Let’s try another way.”
- “What would you tell a friend who got this one?”
Try avoiding
- Giving the answer right away. Ask one question first.
- Comparing them with a sibling or classmate.
- Long explanations. One small hint usually helps more.
In Studying with Dad activities, hints and second tries are part of the design. The parent view shows where hints helped, so you know what to revisit together.
